Clue

Based on the 1985 movie Clue which in turn is based on the board game Cluedo.

Set in 1950s United States during the McCarthy era. On a dark and stormy night (of course), six guests arrive at Boddy Manor and are given pseudonyms to hide their identity for the night (Peacock, White, Scarlet, Plum, Mustard, Green).

Wadsworth, the butler, reveals that they’re all being blackmailed. Then the blackmailer arrives – Mr Boddy. To what should nobody’s surprise, Mr Boddy is murdered. But no one knows who the murderer is, nor which of the six murder weapons (revolver, candlestick, wrench, lead pipe, rope, dagger) was used to do it.

The guests and staff split up to search the nine rooms of the house. Some unexpected guests arrive and there are more murders – six in total, each with a different weapon, each in a different room.

Finally all the guests line up and accuse each other of murder, just like at the end of the game.

Characters

Wadsworth

The butler and the ‘main’ character in what is otherwise an ensemble show. Is very upright and British but as the night descends into chaos he becomes more dishevelled and chaotic himself.

Yvette

The sexy French maid who turns up for a night’s work to wait on guests and ends up locked in a mansion with a murderer. Not as innocent as she may seem and ends up murdered.

Mrs Peacock

Married to a prominent politician and it’s killing her to not use her real name. Will bribe anyone who stands still long enough and is being blackmailed as a result. Is prone to overreaction and hysterics, taking to drinking out of a hip flask on several occasions. Needs to do a staged fall

Mrs White

A black widow. She is being blackmailed to keep her most recent husband’s death quiet. Is very cold and calm throughout the play, even as the bodies stack up. For her, murder is just another Tuesday.

Miss Scarlet

Runs an escort service and is being blackmailed to stay in business and not get arrested. Loves that the other guests are being exposed to be as dirty as she is, and she doesn’t bother to hide her glee.

Mr Green

Works for the government but is being bribed for being homosexual. Is a bit jumpy and a complete klutz. Will always spill his drink or sit on the collapsing table.

Colonel Mustard

Military, a blustery blowhard. Assumes that he is in charge of every situation when it’s blindingly obvious he isn’t. Fails to understand even the most basic of word play.

Professor Plum

A struck off psychiatrist. A complete sleaze that keeps that side of his character mostly hidden under an intellectual veneer.
